Power & Blackouts
Power Outage Guide
What to do before, during and after the lights go out.
9 min read

Before
- Charge power banks when a storm is forecast
- Fill pitchers and the bathtub
- Keep the gas tank above half
- Know how your garage door opens manually
During
Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed. Use battery light, never candles near anything that can burn.
- Unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from the surge when power returns
- Leave one lamp switched on so you know when it is back
- Check on neighbors who use powered medical equipment
Heat and cold
Never run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors or in a garage. In cold weather, close off one room and gather there. In heat, go low, stay wet, and find a cooling center before evening.
After
- Check the fridge and freezer thermometers before you check the food
- Restock what you used the same week
- Note what was missing and fix that one thing
