The go-bag

• Three days of food and water, plus bowls
• Spare leash, harness and carrier
• Medication and a copy of vaccination records
• A recent photo of you with the pet, for identification

Paperwork

Shelters and pet-friendly hotels ask for vaccination records. Keep a photo of them on your phone and a printed copy in the bag.

Where you would go

Not every emergency shelter accepts animals. Find two pet-friendly hotels an hour away and save the numbers now.

• A window sticker noting how many pets live here
• Boiled or bottled water during advisories — pets get sick from the same bacteria
