Emergency Food & Water Guide

Water math

One gallon per person per day, for three days. Half for drinking, half for everything else. Pets count.

Food that works

The best emergency food is food you eat anyway, bought one extra of.

  • Peanut butter, crackers, tinned fish
  • Shelf-stable milk and instant coffee
  • Canned beans, soup and fruit
  • Granola bars and dried fruit
  • Comfort food — this matters more than people admit

Cooking without power

Assume no cooking at all for the first day. A camp stove is fine outdoors only, never inside.

Rotation

Twice a year, on the same weekend you change smoke alarm batteries, eat the oldest items and replace them.
