Apartment Preparedness Guide

The one-bin kit

Everything worth having fits in a single storage bin you can carry.

  • Lantern, headlamp, power bank
  • Three gallons of water per person, in flat containers
  • No-cook food for three days
  • Documents pouch and cash

Questions to ask your building

  • Where is the water shutoff?
  • Does the garage door open without power?
  • Is there a resident text list?
  • Which stairwell is the fire exit?

High floors

Above the fifth floor, water pressure and elevators both depend on power. Store a little extra water and keep walkable shoes near the door.

Never indoors

No generators, grills, camp stoves or charcoal inside an apartment or on an enclosed balcony. Carbon monoxide moves between units.
