What Actually Happens During a Boil-Water Advisory?

A boil-water advisory usually means one of two things: pressure in the system dropped, or a routine test came back questionable. Neither means your water is definitely contaminated. Both mean the utility cannot promise it is not.
The rule

When it lifts
- Run every cold tap for five minutes.
- Dump the ice, and run the icemaker through two full cycles.
- Flush and refill water filter pitchers, and replace the cartridge.
- Run the dishwasher empty on hot.
