How to Build an Emergency Kit When You Live in a Small Apartment
By Dana Whitfield · July 12, 2026 · 7 min read

Most preparedness advice quietly assumes a basement. If you live in 600 square feet, the useful question is not what to buy but what earns its shelf space.
The one-bin kit
- A rechargeable lantern and a headlamp.
- A power bank, charged, plus the cable for your phone.
- Three gallons of water per person, in flat or collapsible containers.
- Food that needs no cooking and no can opener you have to find.
- A small first aid kit and a week of any prescription you take.
- Copies of your lease, ID and insurance, in a zip pouch.
- Cash in small bills.

Lighting
Rechargeable LED Lantern
Soft, even light for a whole room without an open flame.
Why we recommend it
A single lantern turns a dark room into a usable one, which is the difference between an evening of waiting and an evening of reading. Far safer than candles and much kinder than a bare flashlight beam.
Best for: Apartments, families with kids, anyone who hates candles
Pros
- + Lights a whole room
- + No fire risk
- + Doubles as a phone charger on many models
Worth knowing
- − Needs topping up a few times a year

Above the fifth floor, water pressure and elevators both depend on power. If you live high up, keep a little more water and a comfortable pair of shoes near the door.
Small spaces reward thinking, not buying. A bin you can actually reach beats a warehouse you do not have.
